Broward paperwork comes before the city permit
Hollywood is in Broward County, so the asbestos filing goes to the county first and only then to the city. We submit the Statement of Responsibilities Regarding Asbestos (SRRA) at least 10 business days before work starts. Broward then issues a Certificate of Submittal, and that certificate travels with the demolition application to Hollywood's building department.
A single-family house still needs the SRRA, even though the federal rule exempts small homes. The county review fee is $100. Behind it sits a survey by a licensed asbestos consultant, explained in our guide to the asbestos survey before demolition. The city's building department sets its own requirements on top of the county step, and we check the city's current list before filing.
Old pools a few blocks from the sand
Coastal Hollywood has plenty of backyard pools that are decades old, with a cracked deck and a pump pad nobody has used in years.
We drain the water, break holes in the floor, then break out the deck and the top of the walls with a hoe ram on a mini excavator. Clean fill goes back in lifts, compacted one layer at a time. The city's permit spells out how many holes go in the floor and how the fill is compacted and tested, so we follow what the city writes on yours. Full removal takes the whole shell out and leaves ground you can build on. Our pool removal page walks through both ways.
Teardowns in the flood zone
Between the Intracoastal and the beach, and around Hollywood Lakes, many houses sit low on flood-zone lots. Once a remodel gets big, the FEMA 50 percent rule pushes some owners to rebuild higher instead. Those lots are narrow, so the dump trucks load from the street side and the screened fence goes right up to the property line. A block house of 38 × 32 ft is 1,216 sq ft. Enter it in the calculator on our demolition cost page and add the pool line to see the whole job.
Up the coast, our Fort Lauderdale demolition crews work from the city's full written demolition checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Does a single-family teardown in Hollywood need the Broward asbestos filing?
Yes. Broward asks for the SRRA on demolitions regardless of how much asbestos the survey finds. Without the Certificate of Submittal, the city won't take the permit application.
Do owner-occupied homes in Hollywood pay the Broward asbestos fee?
No. Owner-occupied homes of four units or fewer are exempt from the $100 review fee. The SRRA still has to be filed, and the city still asks for the certificate.
What happens to the old pump and the equipment pad?
A licensed electrician disconnects the pool circuit first. Then we break out the pump pad along with the deck, and the old pump and heater go out with the scrap metal.
